What Are Electric Motors?

Electric motors are machines that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. In short, they take electricity and turn it into motion or movement.

From small fans in our homes to big industrial machines, electric motors are everywhere. Think about it — washing machines, ceiling fans, ACs, refrigerators, even those bulky adapters and chargers — most of them use motors or small transformers to work. Without electric motors, modern life would come to a standstill.

What Is Scrap Electric Motor?

When electric motors stop working or are removed from old or damaged machines, they become scrap electric motors. These motors still have valuable metals like copper, aluminium, and steel, which is why they’re collected, sorted, and recycled.

But not all scrap motors are the same. There are different types (or grades) based on the amount of copper inside, the condition, and whether they are clean or mixed with other materials.

Different Grades of Scrap Electric Motors

Type Description
Contaminated Electric Motor Scrap These motors have too many unwanted materials mixed in — like plastic, rubber, metal pieces, or even wood. They need extra cleaning before recycling.
Transformers & Compressors This includes small transformers (like the ones inside adapters and chargers) and compressors taken out from fridges and air conditioners. If the transformer has copper winding, it’s more valuable.
High Grade Electric Motors These are taken from vehicles — like alternators and starter motors from cars and trucks. They usually contain high-quality copper and are considered very valuable in scrap recycling.
